Paul Walker's Daughter Wins $10.1 Million Settlement

Paul Walker's daughter Meadow Walker has been awarded a $10.1 million settlement from Roger Rodas' estate. Roger Roda was the friend who was driving the car that killed both Paul Walker and himself in 2013.

"The amount paid by the estate of Roger Rodas into a trust for Meadow Walker only covers a fraction of what her father would have earned as an international movie star had his life not tragically been cut short," Meadow's lawyer, Jeffrey Milam, said in a statement to City News Service.
Roger Roda's widow and Paul Walker's daughter tried to sue the carmaker for Paul Walker and Roger Roda's death but Meadow's lawsuit was denied while earlier this week, a federal judge ruled that Rodas' widow cannot prove the carmaker was responsible for the accident. So she didn't win either.

Nigeria Customs Urges FG To Review Forex Policy As Revenue Falls

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Retired Col. Hameed Ali, on Friday urged the Federal Government to review the foreign exchange policy which had affected imports and revenue collection.

Ali made the plea in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos as maritime activities closed for the week.

He said that Nigeria was an import-dependent economy, adding that this year could be a tough year due to delay in reviewing the forex policy.

Ali said that the service was working hard in making sure that it generated more revenue on excise to complement imports.

“The volume of trade is low. So, there is need for volume of trade to go higher for us to generate more revenue,” Ali said.

In the week under review, the Customs service said it would examine laws concerning the discharge of oil and gas related cargoes in some terminals in the country.

Ali stated this against the backdrop of controversies surrounding the discharge of oil and gas related-cargoes at designated terminals.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) had last year, issued a directive that all oil and gas related cargoes must be handled only at the designated terminals in Onne, Warri and Calabar ports.

Ali, who went on a tour of facilities of Snake Island Integrated Free Zone (SIIFZ) and Lagos Deep Offshore Logistics Base (LADOL), said the Customs management was now more knowledgeable about the zone’s activities.

He said, “I have listened to your presentations. I would like to assure you that President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is one of fairness, equity and transparency.”

The Customs chief said that said that in the past certain things were done in accordance with the laws.

He noted that the administration believed in doing business in accordance with the law.

“We as the Customs Service have no choice but to toe that line. We have to walk the path of equity and justice.

We will look at the laws that exist. If we find anything contradictory to the laws, we will address it but if it is in accordance with the law, we are also in a position to let you know,” Ali added.

The comptroller-general said that the service would cooperate with oil and gas related companies to improve its operations.

The Zonal Coordinator in charge of Zone “A”. Assistant Comptroller- General of Customs, Ekporwei Edike, said he had visited all the commands under the zone and ensured that officers were diligent and efficient in their duties.

Edike, however, urged active officers to manage the inactive officers to enable them to be active.

He said that officers should exploit all avenues to generate more revenue, adding that officers should be cognisance of the nation’s security.

The Chairman of the SIIFZ, Anwar Jarmakani, said that Nigeria was losing billions of Naira due to a monopoly which allowed for the discharge of oil and gas related cargoes only at designated terminals in the country.

The SIIFZ is also the location of NigerDock, a ship repair, fabrication, supply and logistics facility offering maritime, logistics and oil and gas services.

“SIIFZ has created more than 6,000 direct jobs, supports over 100,000 families through indirect jobs and has delivered over 27,000 training programmes.

Free Zones increase and expand our industrial base and improve investments in the country. We are need positive change in line with the Federal Government’s vision,” Jarmakani said.

He called for the discharge of all oil and gas cargoes at their ports of preference.

Also, during the week, the comptroller-general flagged off the training of 60 enforcement officers of the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal for proper administration of the enforcement unit.

Ali flagged off the enforcement course at the Customs Training School, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said that the essence of the course was to train officers in such a way that they would have the capacity to establish proper enforcement unit at the Kirikiri Lighter Terminal Command.

“This training is in line with the present administration of Customs on capacity building to enhance productivity and efficiency of officers and men of the command.

I am appealing to you all to take the course very serious because they are the first set to undergo such training of all the various commands,” the comptroller-general said.

Ali said that such enforcement course would be used as one of the necessary conditions of promotion and career development.

The Customs chief, however, urged the officers undergoing training to exhibit the qualities they had gained while on the training.

The Customs Area Comptroller, Kirikiri Lighter Terminal, Benjamin Aber, said that the trained officers would also embark on military training on weapon handling and maintenance.

“This is just the beginning. Customs is using this set of officers to establish a proper enforcement station to remodel Kirikiri Command to be one of the best enforcement commands in Zone A,” Aber said.

He, however, noted that the selected officers should consider themselves fortunate, adding that they were trained to assist other commands.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Merit Awards on ICT Unit Training were also presented to: Deputy Comptroller-General Austin Warikoru; Deputy Comptroller-General Iya Umar; and Assistant Comptroller-General Folorunso Adegoke.

Other recipients of the Award were: Assistant Comptroller-General Adesina Odunmbaku; : Assistant Comptroller-General Ahmed Mohammed; and Assistant Comptroller-General Eporwei Edike.

NAN reports that the rest were: Comptroller Benjamin Aber; Comptroller Yusuf Bashar; Comptroller Aminu Abba; Comptroller Sanni Madugu; and Comptroller Lami Wushishi.

Awards were also presented to: Comptroller Ade Sanni; Comptroller O.F. Adetoye; Comptroller O. A. Oyeleke; Assistant Comptroller Martina Tilley-Gyado; and Assistant Superintendent of Customs I Aitas Amilegbe.

In a related development, the comptroller-general described the activities of smugglers in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo State as “daring and sophisticated”.

The NCS chief, who was on a two-day working tour of Oyo/Osun Area Command of the Service, visited the border formations at Saki.

Ali, however, called for increased synergy between operatives of NCS and other security agencies.

He said that plans were underway to ensure that the agency was effectively equipped to carry out its primary functions of curbing smuggling, and generating revenue.

Ali urged officials to be more pro-active in intelligence gathering by monitoring what was happening around them and nipping this in the bud.

He also renewed his call for the establishment of community/customs relationship to further assist in anti-smuggling operations.

Ali disclosed that government was working assiduously toward installing border posts at necessary locations across the country.

According to him, this had already been factored into the scheme as part of efforts to curb smuggling in the country.

He said the NCS and Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) remained the major source of revenue for the Federal Government.

“It is not a matter of choice; it is a must that we must step up our performance in order to garner that money to sustain this nation. We have no choice.

Oil has gone so low that we can no longer be dependent on oil. Solid minerals have not been developed to the level that it will sustain us.

So, the only source of stable revenue for the Federal Government is the FIRS and the Customs,” he said.‎

Fayose Raises Alarm Over Buhari’s China Trip To Borrow $2bn, Funding Of 2016 Budget With N1.84tr Loan

Read the press statement below...
Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has raised the alarm over President Mohammadu Buhari’s scheduled trip to China to borrow $2 billion as part of the N1.84 trillion programmed to be borrowed to finance the 2016 Budget, describing the move as an attempt to mortgage the future of Nigeria and its people.
The governor, who said the 2016 budget was not a reflection of the present economic reality in the country, added that; “By the time they borrow N1.84 trillion to fund their N6.06 billion budget; I wonder how Nigeria will survive in 2017 when the Federal Government will be servicing debt with about 50 percent of its budget.” It has been widely reported that Nigeria wants to raise about $5 billion abroad to cover part of its 2016 budget deficit.

This was said to be projected to hit N3 trillion ($15 billion) due to heavy infrastructure spending at a time when the slump in global oil prices has slashed its export revenues.

In a release issued on Friday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said; “In elementary economics, you don’t propose to spend more when your income reduces and I still can’t understand this Buharinomics in which Nigeria is going to spend N6.06 billion with crude oil bench mark of $38 per barrel when the country budget was N4.5 trillion in 2015 when crude oil bench mark was $53 per barrel.

He said since the President claimed to have recovered and still recovering trillions of Naira looted from the treasury and over N3 trillion saved from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), the 2016 budget should be funded with the recovered fund.

The governor said he was alerting Nigerians of the danger in the federal government plan to fund the 2016 budget with loan, adding that; “Tomorrow, it will be said of me that I did not keep silent when Nigeria was being mortgaged to unnecessary debt.

He warned that with the proposed N1.84 trillion borrowing, $2 billion of which President Buhari is already going to borrow in China, the nation may soon be going the way of Greece because Nigeria will be borrowing N5 billion per day for the next 365 days. “If your income was N200, 000 per month last year and your expenditure was N195, 000 per month; does it make any economic sense for you to propose to spend N300, 000 per month this year that your income has reduced to N120, 000?

“Only President Buhari can explain to Nigerians what manner of Economic theory encourages borrowing of N1.84 trillion to fund a N6 trillion budget. As for me, it is nothing but a voodoo economic theory and Nigerians must take note that the income that should accrue to them in five years’ time is about to be spent in one year by the Buhari’s APC government,” the governor said.

GEJ's Nephew Granted Bail After EFCC Arrested Him

Read the press statement below...
Barrister Azibaola Robert, a nephew of former President Jonathan who was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC)  in what was popularly adjudged to be a desperate partisan attempt by the present administration to implicate and persecute the immediate past president of Nigeria has been freed by the court.

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama, Abuja, on Thursday ordered the
Economic and Financial Crimes Commission  to immediately release Mr. Azibaola Robert, on bail.

Justice Olasunbo who ruled on an ex parte application filed by Azibaola Robert's lawyer, Chief
Chris Uche (SAN),  held that the applicant’s detention by the EFCC‎ for over two weeks without being charged to court was unconstitutional.

The judge further ruled that the bail granted the applicant was to subsist pending his arraignment by EFCC before any court or the hearing of his substantive suit.

The terms of Justice Olasunbo Goodluk's, ruling on Azibaola’s ex-parte application are that the bail should be guaranteed by two sureties and each of the sureties must be a serving or retired Director in any of the Federal Government’s ministries or parastatal resident within Abuja.
The applicant is also required to deposit his passport to the Chief Registrar of this court.

Azibaola Robert is a prominent entrepreneur from the Niger Delta with vast business interests in the area of construction and engineering. Two of his companies, Kakatar and Oneplus Holdings were mentioned among 300 other companies and individuals spread across the country by the presidential committee probing the contracts issued by the Office of the National Security Officer during Jonathan’s administration.

Azibaola's brother, who had earlier expressed fears over his brother's well-being, maintain that Robert had not breached any laws and his company, Mangroovtech, which is why now Kakatar CE Limited got all its contracts through jcompetitive bidding and nothing more

He then urged the EFCC to respect the laws of Nigeria and grant his brother immediate bail and release both him and the executive director of the firm or charge them to court of competent jurisdiction.

He added that the constitution of Nigeria protects his brother and Mr. Dakoru Atukpa, an executive director of his company, Oneplus Holdings from arbitrary arrest and being kept incommunicado for weeks without being charged to court or granted bail.‎

Federal High Court Sacks NFF President Pinnick Amaju As Giwa Takes Over A Federal High Court In Jos Has Sacked The Amaju Pinnick-Led Board And Ordered Ambassador Chris Giwa To Resume Office As President....

The crisis rocking the Nigeria Football Federation has taken a new twist as the Federal High Court in Jos has sacked the Amaju Pinnick-led board and ordered Ambassador Chris Giwa to resume office as president.
A top NFF source who pleaded anonymity confirmed the news exclusively to NAIJ.com Sports
“I can confirm to you that a high court in Jos has sacked Amaju Pinnick. He and his board members are expected to vacate the office with immediate effect,”he said.

With the Super Eagles’ failure in their quest to reach the 2017 African Cup of Nations, there had been calls from different quarters for Pinnick to resign his position.
The embattled NFF president immediately reacted to the claims saying those calling for his resignation are very unfair to him.
He said: “I have heard calls by some persons asking me to resign but that is very unfair knowing the achievements this board has recorded during my tenure.
“We won the Africa Women’s Championship in Namibia, the FIFA U17 World Cup and we also qualified for almost all major competitions during this period.
“I was elected by the congress with four-year tenure and it will be very unfair for anyone to ask for my resignation.”

However, with the Federal High Court ruling today, April 8, Chris Giwa is expected to set-up a new board immediately.

Among them is Mohamed Abrini, wanted over last year terror attacks in Paris.  The 31-year-old Belgian was "more than likely" the "man in the hat" seen on security camera footage at Brussels airport on March 22 with two suicide bombers, public broadcaster VRT reports, citing unidentified sources.

Abdeslam, one of the prime suspects in the Paris attacks, was arrested in Brussels two weeks ago before suicide bombers struck the city.

PDP’s Loud Silence: How Not To Be An Opposition Party

The silence has been deafening. It is what some philosophers will describe as conspiracy of silence. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the main opposition camp, has been worryingly silent over critical issues affecting the nation.
One is the nagging fuel crisis that has bedeviled the nation for some three weeks. The PDP, quite surprisingly, has not said anything on the matter that affects every Nigerian. There have been no punches for the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which clearly miscalculated in the months before the crisis.
Nigerians have continued to queue in filling stations without a comforting word from the opposition party. One expected the PDP to have sympathised with the masses as a positive way of warming itself back to their psyche.
The party should have also descended on the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for inflicting the hardship on Nigerians. That should have afforded the opposition the opportunity to point out that the change mantra of the APC was becoming a mirage after all.
Then, the PDP should have gone ahead to gloat about how it ensured constant availability of the single most important commodity in the nation, at least in the last administration except for a few occasions.
The criticism of Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, by the national leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, should have further armed the PDP with greater ammunition to tear the current administration apart. To rub it in on the APC, the PDP would have provided alternatives to the clearly faltering policies of the current administration that created the fuel crisis, one of the biggest and longest in the nation’s history.
But the party kept quiet. It was not there when many Nigerians looked up for its views. It criminally refused to capitalise on the missteps of the APC that hit the masses so hard. Were it alive to its opposition role, the PDP should have convinced Nigerians it would have handled the fuel crisis much better and quicker.

The disturbing silence of the party on power outage across the nation, which has condemned Nigerians to untold hardships, is a big wonder to stakeholders. It is a big surprise that the PDP, which left office last May with over 2,000 megawatts, is saying nothing when the APC cannot even guarantee 1,000 megawatts.
Before the power generation dipped, the current administration had introduced increased tariffs contrary to its promise to tackle the problem of metering first. The PDP looked away as Nigerians complained and groaned. The APC got away with the increment without as much as a whimper from the main opposition party.
By refusing to offer opposition views, the PDP is failing its teeming members across the nation. It is helping doubting members to move on to the APC or become apathetic. It is allowing the current administration to get off monumental missteps that would have been used to convince Nigerians the switch to change last year was a big mistake. Admittedly, the party is new to its new role as an opposition mouthpiece. But it had the APC to learn from.
The APC did a fantastic job, putting the PDP on its toes throughout the Jonathan’s years. Every policy was dissected with alternative views offered. Every mistake was magnified in the eyes of Nigerians in a way that presented the PDP as misfits. With the alternative views presented, Nigerians started embracing the APC as a party with the winning formula. That impression made them switch over effortlessly last April.
Now, that the APC is finding the seat of power too hot to handle, it is up to the PDP to play its part. It can either stay quiet and go into oblivion or play the opposition role very smartly until it is back on the seat of power.
