Senate President Bukola Saraki Says The Gender And Equal Opportunity Bill Will Be “Reintroduced”

The 8th Senate’s rejection of the Gender and Equality bill elicited a lot of outrage from Nigerians who viewed the lawmakers’ rejection as insensitive to the plight of the Nigerian woman.

But that was not for too long, as Senate President, Bukola Saraki, in response to a tweet by Japheth Omojuwa this had said that the bill will make a return, that it only suffered a set back.

See the tweets below.

Senator Bukola Saraki also posted on his Facebook page:

Today, we discussed the Domestication of the Provisions of the United Nations Convention Eliminating all forms of discrimination against women under A Bill For An Act To Incorporate and Enforce Certain Provisions of The United Nations Convention On The Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women – the protocol to the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, and Other Matters Connected Therewith.

As I said during the International Womens Day last week, I am of the opinion that there are substantial parts of the bill that are crucial to the development of our nation such as the Equal Access to Education, strengthening of the laws on Violence against Women, Ending Abduction of girls, Sustenance and Promotion of Entrepreneurship opportunities, Gender Mainstreaming and Gender equality, female participation in governance, among others.

Unfortunately, the bill suffered a slight set back because there were some parts of the Bill that some Senators disagreed with along the lines of religion and tradition. The beauty of democracy is that it gives us the opportunity to consider different opinions and this bill can still be represented and reconsidered on the floor of the Senate

I have it on good authority that Senator Biodun Olujimi who introduced this bill will reintroduce it after re-drafting it to address some of the reservations that were expressed on the floor of the Senate.

Moreover, the Republican presidential candidate is also the son and grandson of immigrants. Isn't that more than a little ironic for one so against immigrants and immigration?

Buhari Condemns The Political Violence In Rivers State, Vows To Deal With All Sponsors Of Violence

Press statement from the presidency...
President Buhari Tuesday in Malabo condemned recent political violence in Rivers State, saying that the killing of people over political differences was primitive, barbaric and unacceptable. "We will deal decisively with all sponsors of violence. I have given the security services clear directives in this regard. We will show that violence in any form will no longer be tolerated before, during or after elections," the President said at an interactive meeting with Nigerians resident in Equatorial Guinea.
President Buhari said that the Independent National Electoral Commission will be encouraged to explore the possibility of Nigerians abroad voting in the 2019 general elections. Noting that some African countries have started allowing their citizens resident abroad to vote in national elections, the President said that he fully empathised with the desire of Nigerians in the diaspora to vote in national elections. President Buhari pledged that he will therefore do all within his powers to fulfil that desire.
"I want all Nigerians to know that I respect them and their right to choose their leaders," he said

The President also said that establishing a new national airline was not currently on the Federal Government's list of priorities. President Buhari declared that his administration's main area of focus now was reducing the level of poverty in the country. The President said that developing the infrastructure needed to boost production in all sectors of the economy and create more jobs for young Nigerians, as well as other actions that will directly improve the living conditions of ordinary Nigerians will continue to be prioritized by his administration. President Buhari was responding to complaints by members of the Nigerian community about the absence of direct flights between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea.

The President assured them that his administration's war against corruption will remain "fearless, relentless and merciless".
"We will be merciless and relentless in pursuing all those who abused public trust. Nigerians will see how some of the elite conspired to run the nation down," he said.

Kaduna State Government Express Their Concern Over School Pupils In Kaduna State Who Leaves Schools After Eating Free Food.

Kaduna State Government, yesterday, expressed concern over the desertion of schools by primary school pupils after taking the free meal offered them. The pupils have developed the habit of leaving school immediately after the free meal under the guise of going to drink water..

The concern was expressed by the state's Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Shehu Adamu while speaking to newsmen in Kaduna yesterday.

He appealed to parents to ensure that children stay back in school after their free meal, so as not to jeopardize the programme. The commissioner stressed that the programme was introduced in order to encourage school enrolment, attendance and retention.

"The main goal of the school feeding programme is to attract out-of-school children to school and keep them in class for them to acquire education and better their lives. We will not allow a situation where childre will just come to school and leave the moment they finish eating their meals; if it is about water, we have asked parents to provide water for their children. Therefore, parents have a responsiblity of ensuring that the children do not only come to school on time, but remain in school till closing hours"
