FG Permits SON To Jail Substandard Product Dealers For 10yrs Without The Option Of A Fine

The Federal Government has given authorization to Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) to imprison dealers who sell substandard products. They said SON has the authorization to jail defectors for ten years. SON has since started with Tyre dealers. They have given a 24 hours ultimatum to tyre dealers all over the country to destroy every fake tyre in their stock or face 10 years imprisonment without any option of a fine.
Acting Director General of SON, Dr. Paul Angya, gave the ultimatum at a stakeholder’s forum for tyre dealers in Lagos, stating. He said fake tyres have been the leading cause of several deaths in the country based on a recent report by the Road Safety Commission. Adding that out of 8,986 accidents recorded in 2015, 722 were due to tyre bursts, which has led to the death of 446 persons
He said:
“Our new Act 2015 empowered us to jail promoters of sub-standard product up to 10 years and we will not relent to jail any culprit. ‘’We are going to stamp out corruption among the tyre dealers, “we are going to set up a taskforce and we will not sleep until we confirm that accidents in the country are not traced to substandard tyres again.”
“We are ready to eliminate importation of sub-standard products into Nigeria, because of this we have reached out to other government agencies to ensure that we work together and stop smugglers of fake products into the country.
“If you have fake tyre in your shop make sure you disposed them in the next 24 hours, thereafter our team will visit you and we will charge you for murderer. “To eliminate corruption from SON, we are going to introduce e-payment, e-invoice and e-receipt to stamp out corruption from the system,”
He said the organization is also working on improving the standard of products that are sold to consumers.
Adding:
“To ease our work and improve quality of goods and products in Nigeria, we are working to improve expansion of SON facilities across the country so that people in Sokoto will not travel to Maiduguri to text their products”
“What many of our farmers do before they can take their products to abroad is to first take it to Ghana laboratory for text, once the goods pass through text in Ghana the products will send to abroad in the name of Ghana and Ghana government will take the glory.”

FG To Provide 3 million Jobs In The Next 3 years - Osinbajo

In a Facebook message posted on his wall this evening, VP Yemi Osinbajo said the Federal Government will provide 3 million jobs in the next three years starting from this year. He said the jobs will be provided in the Technology, Wholesale & Retail, Construction and Agro-allied sectors of the Nigerian economy. He also stated that this year alone, over 700,000 private sector jobs will be created, majority of which will be in the Agro-allied sector. Read what he wrote after the cut..

President Muhammadu Buhari and I are accountable to the Nigerian people.
The central focus of President Buhari's administration is the creation of jobs. Every proposed policy begins with "how many jobs can this policy create?"
Today, I received the Strategic Framework and Implementation Plan on job creation and youth employment in Nigeria jointly packaged by the Job creation Unit of the Presidency, and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, NESG.
Three million jobs would be created in the country within three years starting in 2016 especially in Technology, Wholesale & Retail, Construction and Agro-allied sectors of the Nigerian economy.
This year alone, over 700,000 private sector jobs will be created, majority of which will be in the Agro-allied sector.
This private sector-led job creation plan is different from the direct government jobs planned by the Buhari presidency which includes the 500,000 teaching jobs for unemployed graduates.
We are not unaware that this process of job creation is slow but President Muhammadu Buhari's administration is addressing the constraints of regulatory and institutional delays in the business sector.
The Job Creation Unit was constituted at the behest of President Buhari to initiate the job creation plan. The National Economic Summit Group, private sector players, validated the plan and will be working together with the government to implement the job creation plans.
Together, we will get this right.
Together, Nigeria will prevail.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Abdullahi Sabi, says the 2016 budget will be laid before the Senate tomorrow for deliberation after which the decision for it to be passed will be taken. Sabi said this while speaking with newsmen in Abuja today March 16th.

"I want to assure Nigerians that the 2016 budget will be laid in the senate chamber as promised by the chairman of the appropriation committee. With that the other processes that will take place, we will surely ensure that we meet up with the time as promised. So I  want to put to rest any suspicion. Tomorrow, we are laying the budget which tells you that all the work that has to be done is done. Yes we told you that it should be passed by tomorrow, we will discuss it take clause by clause and give it that loud voice to say it’s ready. When you set a target, it is to allow you work hard to achieve the budget. By laying the budget is as good as passing the budget. I think we have done very well to get the budget laid by tomorrow. We drive the key policies of this government. To ensure there are job creations, small and medium enterprises will be empowered etc. When a budget is laid, the other things are just mere processes.‎”he said

Nigerian Beauty Queen In The UK, Escapes Death After Horrible Allegic Reaction To Eyedrops

Maria Adejokun, who was the second runner up at the Miss Teen Africa UK contest 6 years ago, has narraed the ordeal she passed through five years ago after she tried using an eye drop prescribed by a doctor in the UK for her itchy eyes. In an interview with UK Daily Mail, Maria who has undergone several surgeries to correct the skin deformity she suffered, said the next morning after she used the eye drops, she woke up with lumps all over her body.

As her condition began to deteriorate she was rushed to hospital. Her skin began to shed and she was put into a medically induced coma.
'Unknown to me, I had a rare, deadly allergy to eye drops which caused by skin to peel off from head to toe. When I was in the intensive care unit, crying in pain, all I thought of was coming home.'

Her mother, Remi Adejokun, said the severe reaction left her daughter in such a terrible state she 'looked like Freddy Krueger' from the horror film Nightmare on Elm Street.
 'I hate to say that, but there were so many blisters - her skin was just tearing off and her lips were very swollen. I looked at her and I was so scared she was going to burst open. I saw death knocking at my daughter's door, all because of eye drops. I was crazy, beyond the worried stage and near to losing my mind. After a week I thought there was no hope - but then as she lay on the bed, unable to talk, I said "Marian, you've just made it to university, that's your dream" and she moved her toe. Realising she could hear me I started to sing our favourite songs to her.

Instead of crying all the time I went to the intensive care unit and danced.' Maria lost so must skin she had to be wrapped in a foil sheet and still has to be fed through a hole in her throat. 'Everywhere was swollen. My nose was huge and my eyes were so red you could take a spoon and scrape out the blood.'she said

Specialist skin experts who examined her had told her mother that she will not be able to survive the reaction but miraculously, Maria pulled through. Today, she says the terrible experience has made her stronger.
'When I was in the intensive care unit, crying in pain, all I thought of was coming home. I've overcome a lot of in my life. Losing my skin because of an eye drop is just another obstacle I've made it through. I am so happy to be alive and share my unique story. No matter what the struggles are, you have to believe in yourself - and have a positive attitude towards life"she said
Maria has since gone on to complete a degree in early childhood studies at the University of Roehampton and has written two books, My Life Is Not My Own and ReachOut2All.

Deputy Governor of Kaduna state, Barnabas Bala, today met with the leaders of Kaduna State CAN, led by the chairman George Dodo, Catholic Bishop of Zaria to discuss the controversial Religious Regulation Bill which the state governor Nasir El Rufai has sent to the state House of Assembly for debate and passage.

According to the Deputy Governor, the Religious Preaching Law is proposed to curb extremism & protect safe practice of faith. He said this is the first time the preaching bill is being subjected to democratic scrutiny since it was enacted in 1984.

Full Biography, Life And Great Achievements Of A Nigerian Legend Chief Obafemi Awolowo(Late).

CHIEF OBAFEMI AWOLOWO G.C.F.R., S.A.N
                                                                                                                                                                     March 6, 1909 – May 9, 1987
                                                                                                                                                                   BIRTH
Jeremiah Oyeniyi Obafemi Awolowo was born on March 6, 1909, to Chief David Sopolu Awolowo (a farmer and a sawyer) and his wife Mary Efunyela Awolowo in Ikenne, Remo, in what is now Ogun State of Nigeria..
                                                                                                                                                       EDUCATION AND EARLY LIFE
He had his primary school education at St. Saviour's School, Ikenne, and at Imo Wesleyan School, Abeokuta. His education at this early stage was interrupted for several years by the sudden death of his father in April 1920, an event that left him without financial support and compelled him to fetch firewood for sale, and do similar jobs, to support his schooling.

He had higher education at Wesley College, he then became a teacher in Abeokuta, after which he qualified as a shorthand typist. Subsequently, he served as a clerk at the famous Wesley college, as well as a correspondent for the Nigerian Times. It was after this that he embarked on various business ventures to help raise funds to travel to the UK for further studies.

Following his education at Wesley College, Ibadan (a teachers' college), in 1927, he enrolled at the University of London as an External Student and graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Commerce (Hons.). He went to the UK in 1944 to study law at the University of London and was called to the Bar by the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple on 19 November 1946. In 1949 Awolowo founded the Nigerian Tribune, the oldest surviving private Nigerian newspaper, which he used to spread nationalist consciousness among his fellow Nigerians.
                                                                                                                                                         MARRIAGE
On 26th December, 1937 Obafemi Awolowo got married to Miss Hannah Idowu Dideolu Adelana. They remained each other's best friend to the end; together they fought for the cause of justice and for the release of their fellow man’s mind from ignorance and the freedom on his body from disease. They had 5 children: Olusegun (1939-1963), Omotola, Oluwole, Ayodele and Tokunbo.

 ACTIVITIES OF AN EVENTFUL LIFE
After a brief spell as school teacher, stenographer, and Daily Timesreporter-in training, Obafemi Awolowo set himself up in Ibadan as a produce buyer and a transporter. It was in Ibadan that his political life began to unfold: he served there as secretary of the Nigerian Youth Movement before he went abroad to study Law in Great Britain.

When he was in Britain, Awolowo formed the cultural group known as “Egbe Omo Oduduwa” in 1949 an association dedicated to the preservation and advancement of Yoruba culture in the new world conditions. Thereafter he founded the Action Group (AG) in 1951 also known as Egbe Afenifere in Western part of Nigeria as part of the Social Programme for the emancipation of Yoruba race. This party, alone among the major political parties, demanded immediate independence based on federalism.and a political party,His party won the first elections ever conducted in Western Nigeria. As a result of that victory, the AG formed the first elected government in the Western Region and Obafemi Awolowo, now a Chief, became the Leader of Government Business and Minister for Local Government in 1952. In 1954, Awo (as he had come to be fondly known within his party) became the first Premier of the Western Region. His party won the elections again in May 1956 and Awo retained his position as Premier. He voluntarily gave up that position when, on December 12, 1959, he was elected into the House of Representatives where he became the Leader of Opposition in Nigeria's central legislature.

He stood up stoutly against mediocrity and drift in government, and began to define alternative channels along which Nigeria's government should go. His own concept of a Nigerian nation was probably too advanced for his opponents, who began to see the Awolowo-led opposition as a major threat. Following a trial for treasonable felony, he was jailed for 10 years in September 1963.

By July 1966, Nigeria's problems had become so interactable that disintegration of the country seemed inevitable. A new Federal Military Government promptly opened the gates of Calabar Prison, brought Awolowo out and appointed him as a minister to take charge of the country's treasury and to provide political support as Vice Chairman in the Federal administration. In those two roles, he was one of the major architects of Nigeria's victory over s~cession in the 3D-month Civil War. When the war ended, Awo waited just long enough to give Nigeria a National Development Plan; as soon as the Plan was completed, he resigned from the government, although, to his last day, he remained grateful to the man who gave him an opportunity to serve his country.

When Nigeria's Armed Forces lifted the ban on civilian participation in politics in September 1978, Nigerians who believed in Awo’s political ideas and principles joined him in forming the Unity Party of Nigeria which presented Nigeria with a dynamic programme of socio economic change along democratic socialist lines. Awo led the party until it was banned, along with Nigeria's other political parties, during the military take-over at the end of 1983.

Chief Awolowo was a great political thinker who committed many of his thoughts to writing. From 1946, he had started a long career in political writing, which flourished whether he was in freedom or in detention, whether he was in power or out of it. It continued to flourish till the very end of his life.

ACHIEVEMENTS:
Chief Awolowo’s greatest achievements resulted from the foresight, clear sense of direction and sheer competence that he brought into government.

At the beginning of his career in government, Chief Awolowo quickly reformed the Local Government system of the Western Region and took revolutionary steps to Nigerianise and improve the Western Nigeria Civil Service. An extremely good judge of men’s qualities, he had also put together a very efficient team of ministers. Having taken those steps, he was set to achieve within 5 years a string of "Firsts" in the history of Africa. Between 1954 and 1959, his government evolved, and was served by, the most efficient Civil Service in Black Africa;
Introduced and successfully implemented the first Free Primary Education programme in Africa;
                                                                                                                                                                         Introduced and successfully managed the first Free Medical Service programme in Nigeria for children up to the age of 18;
                                                                                                                                                         Established the first Television Station in Africa;
                                                                                                                                                                    Built the Liberty Stadium, the first such modem sports facility in Nigeria;
                                                                                                                                                                  Introduced and successfully implemented the first minimum wage policy in Nigeria and actually paid to Western Nigerians from October 1954 a minimum wage that was double the amount paid to workers of the same level in some other parts of Nigeria;
                                                                                                                                                                  Set up Nigeria’s first industrial complex at Ikeja;
                                                                                                                                                                    Set up Nigeria's first commercial Housing Estates at Ikeja and Bodija, Ibadan.
                                                                                                                                                              Besides these, Chief Awolowo’s government had –

Laid the foundation for development in commerce and industry by creating an efficient
Western Nigeria Development Corporation, the ancestor of the present-day O'dua Investment Company;
Taken successful bold Steps to revolutionise the production and marketing of cocoa by farmers in Western Nigeria; and                   .
                                                                                                                                                                                       Created the infrastructure for rural development by promoting 900 cooperative societies in about 3 years and by providing within 5 years almost 10 times as many miles of road as he inherited from the British administration.
                                                                                                                                                                   There is a not-so-visible achievement arising from all these. By making election promises and fulfilling them within a few years, Awo had led his region to evolve a culture that demandsand evaluatesa socio economic programme from those who seek to govern them.

In the Federal government, Awo managed the finances of Nigeria so shrewdly and so competently that the Federal Government successfully waged an expensive 30-month war against secession without resorting to foreign loans and without compromising its sovereignty.
