Photo Of Previous Jailbreak At The Prison

Thirteen inmates escaped in fresh jailbreak recorded at Koton Karfe prison in Kogi in the early hours of Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered from a reliable source that the incident happened at about 7AM when the inmates forcefully brought down the wall of the prison.

The all male prison facility which was inaugurated in 2014 has the capacity to accommodate 180 inmates.

However, NAN gathered that it was accommodating 263 inmates as at the time of the jailbreak, Saturday.

NAN also gathered that one of the escaped inmates was re-arrested almost immediately by security agents.

NAN recalls that this was the third jailbreak recorded in Koton Karfe as the old prison facility witnessed similar jailbreaks in 2010 and 2013.

In previous jailbreaks 132 inmates escaped from the prison and majority were awaiting trials.

It was gathered that Comptroller–General of the Nigeria Prison Service immediately sent a representative to Koton Karfe to assess the situation.

The State’s Controller of Prison, Musa Maza, who would have shed more light on the incident, did not pick several calls made to his mobile telephone line.

"Kabiyesi, the news of your death came came to us at Ile Oodua in Ife with a rude shock as we will miss you for your love which you had always demonstrated to us throughout your 26year remarkable reign.

Declaring amid cheers from supporters, Fayose said, “No amount of intimidation and harassment will shut my mouth, I am the voice of the common man in Nigeria.
“I want to assure you, even if they are ten thousand, the Lord will raise a standard against them. Any government that rises against me, that government will fall. We Are Making Genuine Efforts To Correct Our Lapses As A Nation - President Buhari

Read the press statement from Femi Adeshina below...
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that lapses that have characterized Nigeria as a nation would be corrected. Receiving a team led by Dr. Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer of Gavi and The Global Fund in State House, Abuja, on Thursday, President Buhari said he was impressed with the patience and steadfastness of leading supporters of health care in Nigeria, "despite our shortcomings as a nation."

"We are making genuine efforts to correct the lapses. We are very serious about people behaving themselves, and being accountable," the President said. "We thank you for deciding to re-engage with us, despite our inefficiencies. You decided to be here, not minding our shortcomings. There are other countries that would bring less problems. We appreciate your commitment, and we will do our best to put ourselves in the best shape to help us," President Buhari said.
Dr Berkley, who noted that the three focal points of the Buhari administration; security, economic development, and anti-corruption were critical to the future of Nigeria, had raised issues over the way donor funds for health care were utilized in the past. He said Gavi and the Global Fund were disappointed when forensic audit revealed systemic weaknesses and corruption in the utilization of funds given in the past, adding that there is now a "breath of fresh air" under President Buhari’s leadership and fight against corruption and they were willing to "close the books of the past, and look into future support." Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, who was also at the event, disclosed that those indicted in the audit of the donor funds in the past, which was done between 2010 and 2015, had already been questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and would be arraigned in court soon.

Mikel Obi Denies Making $30,000 Donation To Olympic Squad

John Mikel Obi has denied media reports making the rounds in Nigeria that he gave 30,000 dollars to his team –mates in the U23 team presently camping in Atlanta, USA.

Speaking from the team's camp at the Hyatt Place, the Captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics was furious:
"I was first told of this unfortunate story by a friend who called me from Nigeria. I thought he was joking until he sent me the link. I don't know the source of this story which to me is all out to divide us as a team. I would have thought that stories that should be coming out in the media are stories that will unite the team instead of dividing us. Our target in Rio is to excel, but if they continue like this, then I wonder how we can be united."
Wondering why the writer thinks that the players are hungry that needed his money, Mikel asked:

"Tell me the players who are in this team that are so hungry that will be looking up to me for survival? Is it (William) Ekong, (Oghenekaro) Etebo, (Shehu) Abdulahi, (Daniel) Akpeyi, (Kingsley) Madu, (Okechukwu) Azubuike or (Stanley) Amuzie, who are my team –mates in the Super Eagles, that I will be donating to, or other players who are plying their trade abroad and are doing well for themselves? To me, this is just mere distraction that won't help this team going into a major tournament like the Olympics."

The Chelsea FC ace then appealed to the sporting press and Nigerians generally to rally round the team and wish the players and officials well as they get ready for the men’s football tournament of the Rio Olympics.

Court Grants Ali Modu Sheriff's Request, Stops PDP Convention

Justice Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja has stopped the planned National Convention of PDP slated for August 17th in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. Delivering judgement in a suit filed by Ali Modu Sheriff, Justice Abang ruled that the May 21st convention of the party that sacked Sheriff from office was illegal and that the caretaker committee raised by the party during that convention was unlawfully constituted.

"The convention was unlawfully held and the caretaker committee was unlawfully constituted. If the Markarfi-led faction, as an apostle of impunity, missed its way to the Port Harcourt division of the FHC, the court cannot be said to have acted within its legal jurisdiction in entertaining the matter,”the judge said PDP had planned to elect members into its key positions during the proposed August 17th convention.

No One Can Prove I Stole Rivers State Money – Former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi Says

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has denied allegations that he embezzled money meant for the development of Rivers state when he was governor. Amaechi said this while speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on corruption organised by the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja today July 28th.

“If you had followed the Rivers State government when I was governor, we were the first state to introduce the Public Procurement Law in the country. The state cabinet used to call the Director General of Public Procurement in the state as an alternative governor, that they wanted an amendment to that law. The reason they wanted amendment is that he (DG) refused to increase the threshold to one hundred million naira, per ministry, instead he reduced it to 10 million naira. I had a battle with him (DG BPE) and the world bank who insisted that we should not go for an amendment but should persuade him to increase the threshold. I remember the cabinet tried to go to court against him and I remember that he was also trying to go to court against Commissioners. In fact, the procurement DG wrote a memo that I felt was very incriminating requesting that since the law requires the governor to take any commissioner who doesn’t comply with the public procurement law to court, I should please take the commissioner of education to court for not complying… Everybody in the cabinet felt that he was an alternative governor, they felt that he was slowing the process,” he said.

Mr. Amaechi said transparency in the use of public funds was key to his administration as governor, and that the Rivers community was fully briefed periodically on how funds were being utilised.

“Within that period we insisted on engaging the indigenous communities on how much we received and how we spent the money. That is why I feel that after this ministerial appointment, I should do everything possible to stay away from government because in spite of all the forms of transparency I introduced in government, one man could begin to tell lies to Nigerians and Nigerians believe him. The governor of Rivers State said I squandered N3 trillion naira. I did not receive up to N1.8 trillion naira as governor both from IGR and funds from federal allocation. So, how could I have squandered money I did not even receive in the first place? You can see the politics of lies and lies. As Minister of Transportation, I run an open and transparent system. I believe in name and shame. What name and shame does is, if you name and shame those of them who don’t have conscience they won’t come to public functions. I do have conscience. In fact, it was the word corruption that brought me to this occasion because I wanted to see who will get up and say to me, ‘this is evidence that you are corrupt. We went to court against the Rivers State government on their allegation of corruption against me. The Court of Appeal said, produce that document that found this man (Amaechi) guilty of those crimes and up till today he (Wike) has not produced it,” he said
