We Are Making Genuine Efforts To Correct Our Lapses As A Nation - President Buhari

Read the press statement from Femi Adeshina below...
President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that lapses that have characterized Nigeria as a nation would be corrected. Receiving a team led by Dr. Seth Berkley, Chief Executive Officer of Gavi and The Global Fund in State House, Abuja, on Thursday, President Buhari said he was impressed with the patience and steadfastness of leading supporters of health care in Nigeria, "despite our shortcomings as a nation."

"We are making genuine efforts to correct the lapses. We are very serious about people behaving themselves, and being accountable," the President said. "We thank you for deciding to re-engage with us, despite our inefficiencies. You decided to be here, not minding our shortcomings. There are other countries that would bring less problems. We appreciate your commitment, and we will do our best to put ourselves in the best shape to help us," President Buhari said.
Dr Berkley, who noted that the three focal points of the Buhari administration; security, economic development, and anti-corruption were critical to the future of Nigeria, had raised issues over the way donor funds for health care were utilized in the past. He said Gavi and the Global Fund were disappointed when forensic audit revealed systemic weaknesses and corruption in the utilization of funds given in the past, adding that there is now a "breath of fresh air" under President Buhari’s leadership and fight against corruption and they were willing to "close the books of the past, and look into future support." Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole, who was also at the event, disclosed that those indicted in the audit of the donor funds in the past, which was done between 2010 and 2015, had already been questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), and would be arraigned in court soon.

Mikel Obi Denies Making $30,000 Donation To Olympic Squad

John Mikel Obi has denied media reports making the rounds in Nigeria that he gave 30,000 dollars to his team –mates in the U23 team presently camping in Atlanta, USA.

Speaking from the team's camp at the Hyatt Place, the Captain of Team Nigeria to the Rio Olympics was furious:
"I was first told of this unfortunate story by a friend who called me from Nigeria. I thought he was joking until he sent me the link. I don't know the source of this story which to me is all out to divide us as a team. I would have thought that stories that should be coming out in the media are stories that will unite the team instead of dividing us. Our target in Rio is to excel, but if they continue like this, then I wonder how we can be united."
Wondering why the writer thinks that the players are hungry that needed his money, Mikel asked:

"Tell me the players who are in this team that are so hungry that will be looking up to me for survival? Is it (William) Ekong, (Oghenekaro) Etebo, (Shehu) Abdulahi, (Daniel) Akpeyi, (Kingsley) Madu, (Okechukwu) Azubuike or (Stanley) Amuzie, who are my team –mates in the Super Eagles, that I will be donating to, or other players who are plying their trade abroad and are doing well for themselves? To me, this is just mere distraction that won't help this team going into a major tournament like the Olympics."

The Chelsea FC ace then appealed to the sporting press and Nigerians generally to rally round the team and wish the players and officials well as they get ready for the men’s football tournament of the Rio Olympics.

Court Grants Ali Modu Sheriff's Request, Stops PDP Convention

Justice Abang of the Federal High Court Abuja has stopped the planned National Convention of PDP slated for August 17th in Port Harcourt, Rivers state. Delivering judgement in a suit filed by Ali Modu Sheriff, Justice Abang ruled that the May 21st convention of the party that sacked Sheriff from office was illegal and that the caretaker committee raised by the party during that convention was unlawfully constituted.

"The convention was unlawfully held and the caretaker committee was unlawfully constituted. If the Markarfi-led faction, as an apostle of impunity, missed its way to the Port Harcourt division of the FHC, the court cannot be said to have acted within its legal jurisdiction in entertaining the matter,”the judge said PDP had planned to elect members into its key positions during the proposed August 17th convention.

No One Can Prove I Stole Rivers State Money – Former Governor, Rotimi Amaechi Says

Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has denied allegations that he embezzled money meant for the development of Rivers state when he was governor. Amaechi said this while speaking at a stakeholders’ forum on corruption organised by the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja today July 28th.

“If you had followed the Rivers State government when I was governor, we were the first state to introduce the Public Procurement Law in the country. The state cabinet used to call the Director General of Public Procurement in the state as an alternative governor, that they wanted an amendment to that law. The reason they wanted amendment is that he (DG) refused to increase the threshold to one hundred million naira, per ministry, instead he reduced it to 10 million naira. I had a battle with him (DG BPE) and the world bank who insisted that we should not go for an amendment but should persuade him to increase the threshold. I remember the cabinet tried to go to court against him and I remember that he was also trying to go to court against Commissioners. In fact, the procurement DG wrote a memo that I felt was very incriminating requesting that since the law requires the governor to take any commissioner who doesn’t comply with the public procurement law to court, I should please take the commissioner of education to court for not complying… Everybody in the cabinet felt that he was an alternative governor, they felt that he was slowing the process,” he said.

Mr. Amaechi said transparency in the use of public funds was key to his administration as governor, and that the Rivers community was fully briefed periodically on how funds were being utilised.

“Within that period we insisted on engaging the indigenous communities on how much we received and how we spent the money. That is why I feel that after this ministerial appointment, I should do everything possible to stay away from government because in spite of all the forms of transparency I introduced in government, one man could begin to tell lies to Nigerians and Nigerians believe him. The governor of Rivers State said I squandered N3 trillion naira. I did not receive up to N1.8 trillion naira as governor both from IGR and funds from federal allocation. So, how could I have squandered money I did not even receive in the first place? You can see the politics of lies and lies. As Minister of Transportation, I run an open and transparent system. I believe in name and shame. What name and shame does is, if you name and shame those of them who don’t have conscience they won’t come to public functions. I do have conscience. In fact, it was the word corruption that brought me to this occasion because I wanted to see who will get up and say to me, ‘this is evidence that you are corrupt. We went to court against the Rivers State government on their allegation of corruption against me. The Court of Appeal said, produce that document that found this man (Amaechi) guilty of those crimes and up till today he (Wike) has not produced it,” he said

Buhari's Presidency Will Energise The Economy - VP Osinbajo

The N500B Social Investment programmes of the Buhari presidency is a means to energize the economy and deal with issues of poverty in the country, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.
Speaking today while receiving a delegation of the Muslim Lawyers Association at the Presidential Villa, Prof. Osinbajo said the social investment programmes would train people, create jobs, feed school children from homegrown farming and grant soft loans to traders, artisans and market women.

"All these are ways and means of energising the economy and deal with some of the harshest problems like poverty," says the Vice President while also adding that despite the current economic conditions in the country there is great hope.
According to him, "we are here at this time because that is the will of God to deliver the goods and do the right things for this country. It is very interesting the situation we find ourselves, but there is great hope."
The Vice President said both the president and himself are committed to a new united Nigeria, populated by a 'New Tribe' that would be united across otherwise divisive lines be it ethnic or religious. He added that Nigerians must fight corruption which is responsible for the current situation of things in the country, stressing that if it is not challenged, corruption would worsen the situation.

He added that as a people "we should never be divided on religion and ethnicity, everyone is free to practice their own faith. When we come together as a people we must advance the interest of our nation."

Earlier the President of the Muslim Lawyers Association, Dr. Kamal Alhaji Daud praised both the president and the vice president pledging the association's support in the fight against corruption and also prayed for wisdom and strength for the Buhari presidency. The group had held a lecture entitled Service Above Self, in honour of the Vice President.

I Will Not Shield Any APC Member- Buhari

President Buhari says if any member of his party APC nor any of his supporters is found guilty in any act of corruption, he will not shield them. He said this in a new interview with The Interviewer magazine.
“Do you just grab people along the road and take them off to court for trial just because you want to create a semblance of balance? First, there has to be an accusation which must be properly investigated, and when a prima facie case has been built, you prosecute.
If any of my backers or party (APC) members has anything established against them, let’s see whether I will shield anyone from prosecution. There seems to be a preponderance of the People Democratic Party members standing trial because they had been in power for 16 years, they had access to the public treasury and abused the trust reposed in them. You can be assured that anybody caught in corruption will answer for it irrespective of party, tribe or religion.”he said

Budget Scandal: Hon. Jibrin Makes More Accusations Of Bribery And Diversion Of NASS Funds

The former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation, Hon. Abdulmumin Jibrin has accused Speaker Yakubu Dogara and three principal officers of diverting money meant for the lawmakers’ official residence.

Jibrin made the allegation in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday in Abuja.

According to Jibrin, the Speaker and Deputy Speaker Yusuf Lasun diverted millions of Naira all in the name of paying for guest houses and their official residence.

“The issue became so messy that the Deputy Speaker openly accused Hon. Herma Hembe of short changing them of millions of Naira in the deal to the shock of many members.

Speaker Yakubu Dogara frequently abuse his office amounting to conflict of interest by soliciting for inappropriate favours from agencies and multinational companies.

He forced an agency to grant loans and a construction company blackmailed to do some work at his Asokoro ‘plot’

Speaker Yakubu Dogara has carefully designed a scheme to scam members through deduction from their salaries certain amount of money for a so called mortgage arrangements to build houses for members.

He has been applying every under hand tactics to ensure Members agree to the deal,” he said.

Jibrin further alleged that the speaker had consistently refused members access to the financial dealings and internal budget of the house.

According to him, the speaker runs the financial management of the House like a cult, aided and abated by the Chairman House services, Hon. Babanlle Ila.

“It is no longer news that all over the House, Members are aware of the monumental fraud perpetrated by Speaker Yakubu Dogara in this regard. We are even told that this is a child’s play compared to the mess and allegations of money laundering he left behind as Chairman house services in both the 6th and 7th Assembly, ” the statement read in part.

According to Jibrin, the EFCC should have something to start working with in respect to his tenure as Chairman House services, if they properly dust their files.

“I am therefore once again calling on colleagues and well meaning Nigerians to prevail on Dogara, Deputy Speaker, Whip Ali Doguwa and Minority leader, Leo Ogor to put the interest of the country first.

“They should allow the house to conduct a thorough investigation into the allegations on them. This is just the tip of an ice bag. I will make further revelations in due course,” Jibrin threatened.

Responding to the allegations, the Special Adviser to the speaker on Media and Public Affairs, Hassan Turaki, described the allegations as false and baseless.

“These are all lies and desperate attempts of a drowning man to clutch unto anything found. All his frivolous allegations do not disclose any element of corruption or wrongdoing against the Speaker,” he said.

The crossfire between Dogara and Jubrin had started since he was removed as chairman appropriation committee, which had led to avalanche of revelations on illegal activities of lawmakers in the padding the recently passed appropriations act.

Jubrin had accused the speaker and some of his principal officers of adding N40 billion for themselves in the budget; he also claimed to have prevented the trio from perpetrating the fraudulent act.
