Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun Says Nigeria Economy Is In Recession.

Nigerians yesterday got a piece of bad news from the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun that the economy is in recession. But there is no need to panic because it will be short, according to her.

Mrs Adeosun, broke the depressing news to Senators in plenary while briefing them on measures adopted to get the economy out of the woods. She said the Federal Government had released N247.9 billion in the last two months for capital expenditure.

She said N60 billion would be released for capital vote in the next few weeks, adding that N74 billion went to the Works Ministry.
All the releases, Mrs. Adeosun said, had been fully cash-backed.

The Minister, however, told the Senators that the recession would be a very short one because the government had measures to reverse the trend.
She said Nigerians should not dwell on the recession but rather on where the country is going through the measures being taken to save the economy.

Mrs. Adeosun said: ”Is Nigeria in recession? Technically. If you go into two quarters of negative growth, technically, we are in recession. But I don’t think we should dwell on definitions. I think we should really dwell on where we are going. I think if we are in recession, what I will like to say is we are going to come out of it and it would be a very short one because the policies that we have would ensure that we don’t go below where we need to go and I think with what we are doing, we would begin to turn the corner I believe by Quarter Three.”

“We are not the only country in recession; many countries are doing far worse than us. But for Nigeria, what Nigerians want to know is ‘how’s that going to affect me’ and I want to assure everybody that what we are doing is going to work and it’s going to turn this economy around,” the minister said.

OPC Issues 14-Day Ultimatum To Militants, Warns Them To Desist From Attacking South-West Communities

Pan-Yoruba organisation Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) has issued a warning to suspected Niger Delta militants attacking people in South-West communities. According to the OPC, either they allow peace to reign, or face the consequences of an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth clash, considering they know where the properties of their leaders’ are situated and where their people reside in the entire South West. Read the full statement titled "Incursion of Ijaw militants into Yoruba land:
Enough is enough" after the cut.

“Enough of these invasions, killings and kidnapping of our people right on our own soil. We of the Oodua Peoples Congress (Reformed) have waited for this long, hoping that the government would curb the deadly acts of the Ijaw people on our kinsmen in their fatherland in Ogun and Lagos states. But, it has now dawned on us that the lives and properties of our people and, indeed, the masses are of no importance to those in authorities and the marauding militants. It is a known fact that we, the Yoruba, are the most contented, accommodating and tolerant among all the ethnic groups in Nigeria. We wholeheartedly welcome other tribes coming into our states either to reside or do business. But, if they want to take our hospitality for stupidity, we are ready to prove to them that the gentility of a tiger is not an act of cowardice. Before now, it was the Fulani herdsmen, now it is the Ijaw people that are on the prowl. Enough is enough.
Consequently, we are giving the Ijaw militants a 14-day ultimatum to allow peace to reign in our land. If they fail to heed the warning, it will henceforth be an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. We will prove to them that Lagos belongs to the Yoruba and not a no man’s land that they tend to erroneously claim. If they must care to know, we have information and facts about where their leaders’ properties are situated in the entire South- West and where their people reside in our midst as well.”

Saraki Denies Going Back To Join PDP

Senate President Bukola Saraki has released a statement denying claims in some quarters that he has joined the PDP. Saraki briefly attended a PDP caucus meeting in the senate yesterday July 20th. Many believed his attendance was a move to join the opposition party. In a statement released by his media aide, Bamikole Omishore, Saraki denied the claim. Read the statement below

The attention of the Senate President's Media Team has been drawn to a false publication that is making the rounds on social media that Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki has defected from the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC). This fabrication is entirely untrue as the Senate President stands committed to the APC; a party that he helped midwife and worked for its victory in the 2015 elections.
In his official capacity as Senate President and chairman, National Assembly, he attended the end of session event of the PDP caucus yesterday evening and spent only 30 minutes before leaving the members to continue with the event.

The Senate President would like to assure every Nigerian that he is committed to the APC-led government and appreciates the confidence reposed in him and the APC during the 2015 General Elections.

Signed,
Bamikole Omishore
Special Assistant New Media to President of The Senate.

Courts Grants Fayose’s Associate Abiodun Agbele N50m bail, Slams N5m Damages Against EFCC

An FCT High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja has ordered the release of Governor Ayo Fayose’s ally, Abiodun Agbele from Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) custody, PUNCH reports

Justice Olukayode Adeniyi delivering his ruling, said that the “wrongful and illegal detention” of the suspect without a competent court order and without being charged to court is a “gross violation” of his human right.

He therefore awarded N5m as damages against the EFCC.

Agbele was arrested on June 27 in connection with the alleged N1.2bn Ekiti governorship campaign scandal.

The EFCC on June 30, obtained a remand order from a Magistrate Court in Ogba to hold Agbele for 14 days.

Agbele’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome said that the EFCC renewed his detention after the given grace period of 14 days lapsed.

Adeniyi said that since the EFCC transferred Agbele to the FCT, the remand order no longer stands.

He admitted Agbele to N50m bail with one surety who must be at least a director in either the federal civil service or the FCT Administration or any of their agencies of the Federal Government or the FCTA. Adeniyi said that alternatively, the surety could be a responsible Nigerian with verifiable residential address in Abuja, and with title documents of property in Abuja.

He ordered that should the anti-graft commission fail to prefer charges against the suspect within 21 days, all his personal belongings seized by the EFCC should be released to him.

Man Narrates How Some Police Officers In Lagos Followed Him To The ATM To Collect N10k Bribe

Television and film producer Benjamin Ogunbodede, has narrated how some police officers in Lagos followed him to the ATM to collect a N10,000 bribe on July 16th. Speaking to Sahara Reporters, Benjamin said he was on his way home last Friday July 15th when he picked up a lady who was going his way. As he approached his destination, he drove into a checkpoint mounted by some mobile police officers. He was puled over and asked to hand over his drivers license which he gave to them.

They also asked for him to open his boot which he did. Seeing that he had nothing incriminating on him, the next question was his connection with the lady in his car. He said she was just someone he offered a lift. The officers then accused him of kidnapping and human trafficking.
"I told them I was just giving her a lift since I was going in the same direction," he said
Not impressed with his explanation, the police officers ordered him to get into his car and drive to the Ajuwon Police Station, while the woman was asked to get into their patrol van. His plea that he should be allowed to call a family member fell on deaf ears as they seized his phone and other belongings. At the station, a police officer searched through his laptop and phone and found nothing incriminating. In their investigation, they found out his car had a different plate number
"I explained that the former owner wanted to have his number plate back since it was registered in his name, so I had to make a change of ownership, got a police report and a new number plate. That also did not impress them" he said
The police officers afterwards accused him of adultery, alleging that the lady whom he gave a lift said she was a sex worker and he was taking her to his place and will be paid N8,000 for her services.

Ogunbodede said he challenged them to bring the lady to him to repeat the allegation in his presence. He told them he is unmarried and could not have committed adultery. The police officers then told him to forget all his explanations and just "settle them" or he will be locked up.
“Guy, leave story and settle us or you will be here longer than you can ever imagine” Ogunbodede quoted them as saying.
They forced him to write a statement. He asked what the settlement they desired was and they responded N50, 000. He slept in their cell and in the morning of Saturday July 16th, he told them he could only pay N10,000. The excited police officers then delegated one of them to follow him to the bank where he withdrew N10, 000 from an ATM at Ajuwon/Akute- Alagbole in Lagos.
"That done, I filled their bail form, and all my properties were released to me. The officers on duty made sure I didn’t get the Divisional Police Officer’s contact details posted on the walls of the station"he said
