Arase Warns Factional PDP Loyalists Planning To Attack The Party’s HQ To Desist Or Be “Promptly, Firmly And Decisively” Dealt With

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase has warned factional party loyalists of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) that they will be “promptly, firmly and decisively” dealt with if they threaten public peace in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He issued the warning in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole, saying that it has gathered intelligence indicating plans by aggrieved members of the party ” to infiltrate Abuja and attack the National Headquarters of the Peoples’ Democratic Party with intent to forcefully occupy the facility”.

The statement read:

Intelligence at the disposal of the Force leadership indicates that some aggrieved factional leaders and members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) have perfected plans to engage thugs from across the country to join them in threatening public peace and security in Abuja. This is sequel to the on-going intra-party leadership crisis in the party and further fallout of the recent political engagements of the Party.

The plan of the brains behind this development is to infiltrate Abuja and attack the National Headquarters of the Peoples’ Democratic Party with intent to forcefully occupy the facility. Towards perfecting this criminality, credible Police sources confirm that the actors will mobilise into Abuja with effect from Monday 23rd May 2016 and they intend to march through major streets in Abuja before proceeding to the PDP Secretariat to manifest their intention.

Consequently, the Inspector-General of Police has directed the deployment of Police assets to secure the PDP Secretariat and protect the staff until the threat to internal security that is being occasioned by the intra-party crisis within the PDP is stabilised. The police action is a proactive initiative which is being emplaced in furtherance to the statutory Mandate of the Nigeria Police to prevent breakdown in law and order and protect lives and property.

The Inspector General of Police, however, warns all actors in the crisis as well as their loyalists to refrain from any act that may threaten public order as the Police shall deal promptly, firmly and decisively with such persons or group in line with their legal obligations.

The Lagos State Government Has Announced Plans To Rebrand The Transportation System In The state.

According to PUNCH, the state Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, made the announcement during the 2016 annual ministerial press briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, saying that the initiative would involve replacing the mini-buses, popularly called “Danfo”, with high-capacity buses.

Mobereola said that the state government would introduce commuter protection number plates and body tags on buses to show their routes and enforce colour uniformity on all public transport systems in the state.

“Lagos State motor parks would be restructured in such a way that alcohol and illicit substances would not be there. We are going to teach transport operators in the state behavioural etiquette and how to talk to commuters,” he said

He also said the state government would introduce commuter protection number plates and body tags on buses to show their routes and enforce colour uniformity on all public transport systems in the state.

According to him, the transformation arrangement which will cover the taxi scheme, rail and water transport systems, is aimed at having a public transport system that supports its megacity status where tendencies for violence are curbed, while drivers and conductors are retrained and registered.

He said that arrangements were almost concluded to phase out the 14-seater commuter buses being used by commercial drivers and replace them with 30-seater buses with air conditioners. He also hinted about plans to enforce the use of approved uniforms for commercial drivers and conductors.

According to the commissioner, the “new vista of professionalism and identity anchored on unique number/dress code” would be implemented by the next quarter.

He also said that the state government is planning to restructure motor parks in the state and introduce holistic ticketing system, through which people could download from the Internet and use for any mode of transport in the state without any hitch.

Nigerian Man And Woman Arrested For Possession Of Cocaine In South Africa

A 29 year old Nigerian woman and a 31 year old Nigerian man were yesterday May 22nd at different times arrested at the Cape Town International Airport for possession of cocaine. According to South African Police Service officer, Van Wyk, the police were conducting random stop-and-search duties at the domestic arrivals at about 11.20am when they approached two African women.

One of the women’s bags was searched by a constable who discovered five small packets concealed in a pair of socks, wrapped in black pieces of plastic.

"When police members unwrapped the packets they found white powder in the small see-through plastic packets. When they asked the suspect about the substances she explained that she is using the substances which is known to her as the drug cocaine. Members decided to physically search the suspect further and discovered more cocaine in about 11 packets wrapped in black pieces of plastic.

The packets were concealed in various parts of her body and also inside her shoes. Prior to searching the suspect, when she was asked to declare anything, she said nothing and when she was asked if she is aware of every item in her bag, she agreed and said that she had packed her bag herself."

The 29-year-old woman was arrested for alleged possession of 30 gram of drugs with estimated street value of R7500. She would appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court soon. About an hour before the lady was arrested, a 31 year old Nigerian man was also arrested at the domestic arrival of the airport for alleged possession of a substance presumed to be cocaine.

The police officer says said police officers were “doing profiling” at domestic arrivals when they spotted a man picking up a pink suitcase from the carousel and walking away in the direction of the exit. Police officers approached him and asked to search his suitcase. The search revealed a hidden compartment with 22 plastic bags containing a “suspicious white substance”.

A sniffer dog reacted positively to the substance. "The weight of the substance is estimated to be 2.36kg with a street value of approximately R708 000. The suspect was detained and is due to appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court soon,".

NNPC Did Not Remit $12.9bn To The FG Account From 2005-2-13- NEITI Report Alleges

An audit report of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) which was released today May 23rd, has alleged that the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) did not remit $12.9bn to the federation account between 2005 and 2013.

The audit report was read out by the Minister of Solid Minerals and Chairman of NEITI, Kayode Fayemi, at a press briefing in Abuja today May 23rd. “The audit revealed that NLNG paid the sum of $1.289bn as dividend, interest and loan repayment for 2013. NNPC acknowledged receipt of ‎this amount, but did not remit it to either the federal government or the federation.

However, it is important to also note that the 2013 figure brings to $12.9 bn the total NLNG payments received by the NNPC between 2005 and 2013, but not remitted by the NNPC to the federal government or the federation. Government should investigate the status of NLNG dividends; NNPC should discontinue alternative importation arrangements and limit itself to export of crude and import of refined products; NNPC should abide by the federal government financial regulations, and always comply with the 90-day credit period,” he said.

Okonjo-Iweala Responds To Missing N30 Trillion Allegations | Says She “Was Never Served With Any Court Processes In Relation To The Said Matter”

 Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has responded to reports saying that she should account for an alleged missing N30 trillion during her tenure as Minister.

Iweala who spoke in a statement signed by her Media Adviser, Paul C. Nwabuikwu said that she was never served any court processes in relation to the the allegation.

The statement titled, “Missing N30 Trillion: Okonjo-Iweala Rebuts SERAP, Takes Legal Action”, read:

Our attention has been drawn to media reports regarding a court judgment alleged to have been entered against the Federal Government of Nigeria and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in respect of an action by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act.

The High Court, according to the media reports, ordered the Federal government and Dr. Okonjo Iweala to provide information relating to N30 trillion Naira allegedly unaccounted for.

Please note the following: Dr Okonjo-Iweala hastens to state that she was never served with any court processes in relation to the said matter. She has not read the judgment and would therefore defer any comments on the matter.

However from the media reports, the case was instituted in February 2015 but was not served until July 2015 after Dr Okonjo-Iweala had already ceased to be the Minister of Finance.

By the date the said papers were purportedly served Dr Okonjo-Iweala was no longer a public officer and could therefore not be the subject of a request for production of any documents or information under the Freedom of information Act.

The Court processes must have been served on others because the attention of Dr Okonjo-Iweala was never drawn to the matter in which she appears to have been sued personally. She therefore did not engage any lawyer to act for her in the matter.

The decision of SERAP to anchor its case on a baseless and unsubstantiated allegation by former CBN governor Professor Charles Soludo that N30 trillion – about seven times the total annual budget during the Jonathan administration – is missing confirms SERAP’s dubious motives and its role as a tool for politically motivated actors.

It is curious that the first time Dr Okonjo-Iweala is being made aware of a matter filed against her in court is in news reports reporting the delivery of judgment. She has instructed her lawyers to take steps to set aside the judgment as it affects her.

Fayose Warns Fulani Herdsmen Over Attack On Ekiti Communities, Says; “We Will Protect Our People”

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has warned that there could be reprisal attacks on Fulani herdsmen in the State if they do not desist from invading communities in Ekiti and attacking the people, describing the Fulani herdsmen that invaded Oke Ako in Ikole local government area of the State on Friday, killing two residents of the town and injuring others as “agents of the devil that must be fished out and punished accordingly.”
Governor Fayose, who commiserated with the people of Oke-Ako, especially the family of the deceased, vowed to do everything humanly possible to forestall the reoccurrence of such attack and safeguard the lives of Ekiti people.

 According to a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said the Fulani herdsmen were becoming major threat to the unity of Nigeria and its people, saying; “I will not fold my hands while armed herdsmen invade communities in Ekiti, killing people and destroying farmlands at will as they have done in other States. “I have directed the police and other security agencies in the State to fish out the killer herdsmen. I am in constant touch with the security agencies and I hope that the killer herdsmen will be fished out wherever they are and made to face the full wrath of the law.

“The people of Oke-Ako should therefore remain calm while the security agents do their job. However, the security agents must be mindful of the fact that the people’s patience has a limit and they must therefore act promptly and decisively.” The governor, who described activities of the Fulani Herdsmen as inimical to the revival of agriculture in the country said; “Farmlands costing billions of naira have been destroyed in States in the South-West, South-East and North-Central zones of the country.

One wonders how Nigerians can go back to farming when those already in the farms are losing billions of naira worth of crops to destruction of their farmlands by the Fulani Herdsmen and the Federal Government is not doing anything about it.” He said; “I am sounding a note of warning to the Fulani herdsmen and those who can talk to them should also do so now. If they continue with these wanton attacks, killing of the people and destruction of farmlands in Ekiti, I cannot guarantee that there won’t be reprisal attacks. “I can also not guarantee the level that the reprisal attacks can get to because as a governor, it is my responsibility to defend and protect my people.”

He called on President Mohammadu Buhari to stop paying lips service to the Fulani herdsmen's menace, saying "as patron of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), President Buhari has the capacity to call the herdsmen to order. “President Buhari should therefore call his people to order because this is Ekiti; our people have the rights to defend themselves. “Most importantly, President Buhari must be reminded of how he was so concerned about the killing of Fulani herdsmen in in Saki, Oke Ogun Area of Oyo State such that he, as a private citizen led Arewa to Ibadan on October 13, 2000, to confront the then Governor of Oyo State, late Alhaji Lam Adesina.”

President Buhari Appoints Muhammed Babandede As Acting Comptroller-General Of Immigration

President Buhari has appointed Muhammed Babandede as the interim Comptroller-General of Nigeria Immigration Service, (NIS). The former Immigration boss Martin Abeshi who was appointed by the President on August 27, 2015, was reportedly fired after holding the position in an acting capacity for six days. At the time of his appointment, he had already been slated to proceed on a three-month terminal leave beging from October 2015.

The removal of Abeshi was contained in a letter, (pictured)which was signed by Lt-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau(rtd) the Minister of Interior on Tuesday, May 17, entitled: 'notification of retirement'. The letter directed Abechi to hand over to Babandede(pictured) with immediate effect.


Vanguard reports that the reason for his sack may be connected with his handling of the recent replacement in the service. The CG allegedly employed his third wife and his eldest son into the service. Both recruits were said to be under-going training in Kano.

Until his appointment, Mr. Babandede was in charge of the Operations and Passport Directorate of the service.

Boko Haram Offers To Release The Remaining Chibok Girls In Return For Avoiding Execution

The Boko Haram sect, who abducted over 200 school girls from Chibok two years ago, reportedly want to broker a deal with the Nigerian government. They are offering to release the remaining kidnapped Chibok schoolgirls in return for avoiding execution. Two of the girls were rescued recently. It is believed that only a third of the abducted girls are still alive.

According to a report in The Times, senior members of the terrorist group said:
"We want to surrender because things are getting worse," said Amir Muhammad Abdullahi, who is reportedly Boko Haram's second in command. He said no side was winning the battle and that only a third of the girls remained as "the rest have been martyred".

President Buhari Condoles President Al-Sisi And Egyptians On Crash Of Flight MS 804

President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday evening, called President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi of Egypt on the telephone to commiserate with him and the people of Egypt on yesterday’s EgyptAir crash which claimed about 66 lives.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the President’s media aide, Garba Shehu.

Condoling the Egyptian leader on the loss of 66 lives in the crash, President Buhari assured President Al-Sisi and the people of Egypt of the sympathy of all Nigerians as they mourn the passengers and crew of EgyptAir MS804.

The statement read in part:

President Buhari told President Al-Sisi that the thoughts and prayers of Nigerians are with the families and friends of bereaved Egyptians and other nationals who are in sorrow as a result of the tragic air crash.

The President prayed that God Almighty will comfort all those who lost relatives and friends in the crash and grant eternal rest to the souls of those who died.

President Al-Sisi thanked President Buhari for his condolence and sympathy.
