Senate Backs New Petrol Price | Wants Immediate Implementation of Palliatives

The Senate on Tuesday endorsed the Federal Government’s decision to peg the pump price of petrol at N145 per litre.

Rising from an Executive Session, presided by Deputy President of the Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, the Senate called on the government to parley labour unions to forestall the threatened strike.

Ekweremadu said that the Senate sympathised with Nigerians for the hardship which the new prices of petrol will cause and called on the government to implement the palliatives.

“The Senate in a closed session deliberated on the increase in the pump price of PMS by the Federal Government and the threats by the organised Labour to embark on a nationwide strike. We resolved as follows:

That we sympathise with ordinary people of Nigeria on the hardships they are going through.

That the Senate will engage the Federal Government to find sustainable ways of improving the welfare of the people of Nigeria.

That we call on government to continue to engage the organised labour and other stakeholders to resolve issues in order not to ground the system and impose more hardships on our people.

That government should immediately start implementing palliative measures contained in the 2016 Appropriation Act passed by the National Assembly,” he said.

The Federal Government last week announced the removal of subsidy from petrol and pegged the price at not more than N145 per litre.

Organised labour threatened to embark on strike by Wednesday if government fails to revert to N86.5 per litre.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode Orders Fixing Of Bad Portions On Oshodi-Apapa Expressway

Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode on Friday expressed dissatisfaction at the deplorable state of some sections of Oshodi-Apapa Expressway, saying the road was too strategic to the economy of the State and therefore cannot be ignored.

Governor Ambode, who made an unscheduled inspection tour of the road while returning from the grand opening of a 70,000 capacity Motorbikes Assembly Plant in Mile 2, directed the State’s Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other relevant government agencies to immediately move to site and fix the bad portions of the road.

A visibly worried Governor Ambode had stopped his convoy and came down from his vehicles to inspect the bad portions of the road alongside top government officials who accompanied him.

The Governor specifically inspected the bad portions of the road between Berlett and Ilasa, and Cele Bus stop inward Oshodi.

Governor Ambode not only directed the officials of the Ministry of Works to immediately move to site, but also ordered that an immediate palliative measure must be put in place to alleviate the sufferings of motorists who have been complaining about the deplorable state of the road through various means.

While addressing some of the crowd that trooped out to welcome him, Governor Ambode said the bad state of the road was of serious concern to him, and that an immediate solution was coming soon.

He said: “The state of this road is just not acceptable. We are going to do something about this place immediately. The Oshodi-Apapa Expressway is too strategic to be left like this.

“I have directed officials of the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure and other relevant agencies to move to site immediately and see what they can do and also create palliatives in the interim to alleviate the plight of motorists.

“I want to assure the people that I share in the difficulties they are going through using this road and we cannot afford to neglect this road,” he said.

He wrote;
"So, I bumped into this well suited windscreen cleaner yesterday in Ogun State. We need more innovative citizens like Abdulahi in Nigeria. Well spoken Abdulahi Olatoyan who is in his early thirties is a University of Ilorin dropout, who turned to the street after the demise of his father to make a living and save enough money to start a business.
He hopes to return to school to finish his studies one day. Photographing and speaking with Abdulahi today inspired me and i do hope that you are inspired by his story too. If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” see more pictures below.

Fayose Is Undermining Our Authority- PDP Says, Advises Him To Learn From Other PDP Governors

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has accused the Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose, of undermining the party's authority by delving into the affairs of the party's National Working Community.

The National secretary of the party, Wale Oladipo, stated this today while addressing reports that Fayose had asked that the party's South West Congress slated for today to continue despite a court injunction secured by the National Working Committee preventing the congress from holding.

Oladipo lamented that Fayose's attitude was unbecoming and that he needs to learn good behavior from other PDP governors like his Ondo state counterpart, Olusegun Mimiko
“Governor Fayose is not a member of the national working committee of the PDP, but he’s causing confusion with his utterances. We are not dabbling into his government and he has no right to tell us how to run the party here. We have an order of the court stopping the congress. The governor cannot overrule the court. He should behave like other governors who do not dabble into the running of the party at the national level. He should learn from Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State who respect the party and the president of the country. The order of the court was even published in three national dailies and therefore, he can’t deny he was not aware. Our national legal adviser who is the chief legal adviser of the party, Mr. Victor Kwon, has advised that we comply with the order and we are complying with it. We are not above the law of the land. Those who want to claim they want to organise any conference are doing that on their own, not on behalf of the party. Whatever comes out of it would be null and void because we are not monitoring it.”he said
