Instanbul Airport Attack Leaves Atleast 36 Dead And Dozens Injured

A gun and bomb attack on Istanbul's Ataturk international airport has killed 36 people and injured about 90.

Three attackers opened fire near an entry point to the terminal and blew themselves up after police fired at them, officials say.
Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said early signs suggested the so-called Islamic State was behind the attack.
Recent bombings in Turkey have been linked to either IS or Kurdish separatists.
Tuesday's attack looks like a major co-ordinated assault, says the BBC's Mark Lowen.

Ataturk airport was long seen as a vulnerable target, our Turkey correspondent adds, reporting from a plane stuck on the tarmac in Istanbul.
There are X-ray scanners at the entrance to the terminal but security checks for cars are limited.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the attack should serve as a turning point in the global fight against militant groups.

"The bombs that exploded in Istanbul today could have gone off at any airport in any city around the world," he said.
The US called the attack "heinous", and said saying America remained "steadfast in our support for Turkey".
German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: "We grieve for the victims. We stand by Turkey".

Media captionWill Carter, eyewitness: "We saw a flash of fire"
He also said foreigners were likely to be among the dead.
Flights in and out of the airport were suspended after the attack.
The US Federal Aviation Administration grounded all flights between the US and Istanbul.
Taxis were used to rush casualties to hospital after the attack.
Eyewitness Paul Roos told the Associated Press news agency that he was due to fly home to South Africa when the attackers struck.
"We came up from the arrivals to the departures, up the escalator when we heard these shots going off," he said.
"There was this guy going roaming around, he was dressed in black and he had a handgun."

Charles Michel, the Prime Minister of Belgium whose capital city was targeted by bombers in March, tweeted from the EU summit in Brussels: "Our thoughts are with the victims of the attacks at Istanbul's airport. We condemn these atrocious acts of violence."

In December, a blast on the tarmac at a different Istanbul airport, Sabiha Gokcen, killed a cleaner. That attack was claimed by a Kurdish group, the Kurdistan Freedom Falcons (TAK).

16 Year Old Homeless High School Student Graduates Two Years Early With College Scholarship

Resilient Washington, DC resident, 16-year-old Destyni Tyree who lives in a homeless shelter with her mum recently overcame extraordinary odds to not only graduate from high school two years ahead of schedule with a 4.0 grade point average, but she also received an academic scholarship to college.Destyni and her family were forced to make the shelter their home after her mother lost her job a few years ago, but the hard-working teenager refused to let her situation affect her. She said she used her unfortunate circumstances as motivation rather than letting it get her down.

Destyni said:
"I don't want to live in a shelter when I get older". "I want to better my life, so that gave me the drive to do what I want to do," she told NBC 4 Washington.
With the outstanding support of her mother and the principal of her school, Destyni worked hard to meet and exceed her goal of graduating two years early.

Destyni plans to attend Potomac State University later this year, but is still saving up money for additional educational expenses not covered in her scholarship, like the cost of books.

Her mum said she is very proud of Destyni's achievement.

AMCON Takes Over AfriJet Airlines Over Unpaid Debt

The Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) on Friday continued its debt recovery drive by taking over the assets of some big debtors.

Pursuant to the order of Justice Chuka Obiozor of the Federal High Court, Lagos Division, AMCON took over the assets of Afrijet Airlines Limited owned by Vitalis Ibe, over a debt of almost N10billion.
AMCON had purchased the bank assets sometime in 2011 from the defunct FinBank and Bank PHB.

The court order also affected Mr. Ibe’s Continental Aviation Services Limited for which Gbolahan Elias, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, has since been appointed Receiver/Manager.

On Friday, the Receiver/Manager took possession of Afrijet Plaza, the corporate head office of the airlines located on Sheraton-Opebi Link Road Ikeja, Opebi, Lagos, along with another asset located at Plot 22, Jimoh Odutola Street, off Eric Moore Road, Surulere, Lagos, as well as Mr. Ibe’s office at the Airport.
The court had ordered the takeover of other offices, branches, stores, warehouses, factories belonging to Mr. Ibe, wherever they may be to help recover the debt.

While granting the order on the application by counsel to AMCON, Justice Obiozor restrained Mr. Ibe and his companies, directors, agents, servants and/or privies from operating, withdrawing from or otherwise tampering with the funds belonging to and/or deposited in any of his bank accounts in Nigeria.
Negotiations on the debt have gone on with AMCON for a long time.

To enforce the order, the court also ordered the police authorities in Lagos State to assist the Receiver/Manager and the bailiffs of the Federal High Court in doing their job.

Afrijet Airlines formally operated from the NAHCO Building in the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, was also a cargo operator  in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Afrijet Airlines still maintains an aviation maintenance shop with its sister company, Elite Aviation.

According to The New York Times, where he worked for nearly 40 years,

“He didn’t go to the movies. He didn’t own a television. He ate breakfast nearly every day at the Stage Star Deli on West 55th Street, where a cup of coffee and a sausage, egg and cheese could be had until very recently for under $3. He lived until 2010 in a studio above Carnegie Hall amid rows and rows of file cabinets, where he kept all of his negatives. He slept on a single-size cot, showered in a shared bathroom and, when he was asked why he spent years ripping up checks from magazines, he said: “Money’s the cheapest thing. Actress Iyabo Ojo Says Her EX Married Her Because She Was Pregnant..

Divorced Yoruba star actress, Iyabo Ojo, has given her opinion on broken marriages even as she stressed that her failed marriage had nothing to do with her acting profession.

She added that there are various reasons people get married.

In a chat with Hip TV, the actress majorly said, “If I had problems with my marriage, it had nothing to do with my acting profession.
“I wasn’t even a star when I got married. And when I got out of my marriage, I still wasn’t a star. Up until I got married, I’d only featured in one film, Satanic, and I pulled out of the industry the moment I got married.

“So I wasn’t acting in those years that I was married. I was a full-time housewife and businesswoman. I actually chose to come back into acting because I had started having issues with my marriage and knew it wasn’t making me happy.
“And I knew that wasn’t the way I wanted to live my life. Yes, there are lots of problems in celebrity marriages; and the reason is that as celebrities, we live in our own world.

“We work hard a lot, moving from one location to the other; and usually when a female in the industry meets a male guy who just comes from the blues, he usually comes with a lot of loaded lies and sweeps some of these colleagues of mine off their feet.

“And they in turn are not patient enough to study these guys well enough, because ‘society expects them to be married. So people tend to marry for specific reasons, and as far as I am concerned, you mustn’t be able to define the reason you love someone to the extent of marriage.

“Once you get married for a reason, then there is a problem. I got married because I was pregnant. That was a reason. My husband married me because I was pregnant for him; that was also a reason. Most men get married to ladies in the industry because of the celebrity aura around them, only to realise that there is a lot to marriage than that.

“They also discover that in reality, these ladies aren’t as perfect as the screens project them and then the men cannot get used to the ego that comes with the profession and typically want to be the man and break those wings. And if the woman is such that wouldn’t be tamed, then there is a crisis and a collision,” the  actress added.

Dino Melaye Speak On The Alleged Forgery Of The Senate Standing Order By Saraki And Ekweremadu

Dino Melaye on Tuesday June 21st on the floor of the senate, spoke against the planned arraignment of the Senate President Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, over alleged forgery of the Senate's standing orders during the election that made them emerge senate leaders in June 2015.

Dino condemned the suit filed by FG against the senate leaders, arguing that the act is a grand design to distract the National Assembly and also to intimidate it into silence and enthrone a one-man rule.

Court Sentences Man To 7 Years In Prison For Posing As An EFCC Operative

Gabriel Charles

Justice U. P. Kekemeke of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Apo, Abuja has sentenced a man to 7 years in prison for posing as an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) officer.

Gabriel Charles was arrested for posing as an EFCC operative and obtaining money by false pretence from Dr. Precious Gbeneol, a former Secretary, Health and Human Services Secretariat, Abuja under the guise of helping her to close a supposed case brought against her.

The offence is punishable under Section 132 of the Penal Code CAP 532 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (Abuja) 1990.

Justice Kekemeke found him guilty of the two-count charge brought against him by the EFCC.

The trial judge sentenced him to six months in prison on count one and seven years in prison on count two without an option of fine.

The sentences are to run concurrently. The judge also ordered that he refund the N880,000 to his victim.

Alleged Forgery: FG Cannot Be Faulted For Its Decision o File Charges Against Saraki, Ekweremadu – AGF Abubakar Malami

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), on Thursday said that charges filed against senate president Dr. Bukola Saraki, and deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu were in order, insisting that the duo and two other defendants in the charge are not above the law.

The minister, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Salihu Isah, decribed the allegations by the senate that the case is a coup against the legislature as “totally untrue and baseless”.

The statement read:

For the benefit of doubt, as stated above, there was a petition bordering on allegations of forgery against the defendants. The petition was investigated by the police and the police recommended the case for prosecution.

At this point, the question is how initiation of criminal proceedings against Dr. Bukola Saraki, Ike Ekweremadu, Salisu Maikasuwa and Bernard Efeturi violated the principle of separation of powers as contained in the constitution?

The action of the Attorney General of the Federation cannot obviously be said to be a coup against the National Assembly as the Senate has claimed.

By preferring the charge, the accused persons are entitled to fair hearing under the law while the prosecution is obligated to prove its case against them beyond reasonable doubts.

Therefore, the Attorney General of the Federation has not violated any known law in the land. Or is the Senate suggesting that its principal officers, members and staff of the National Assembly are above the law or enjoy same immunity as do the nation’s President and Governors?

It is common knowledge over the years since the nation embraced democratic system of governance and backed by the current constitution those elected officers of government, who are exempted from legal encumbrances, whether it is civil or criminal, are known to all.

It is pertinent to be reminded too, that forgery of the Senate Standing Rules cannot be described as the internal business of the National Assembly that is exclusively only in its purview.

The Attorney General of the Federation cannot therefore be faulted for his decision to initiate legal actions against the accused persons for alleged forgery after a thorough police investigation of the issue, whether there was an amendment to the Senate Standing Rules in 2015 or not.

The case of Adesanya vs Senate, which has been seriously touted in its (Senate) press statement does not support them and they should rather take their plea and defend the action accordingly.

Soldiers And Police Exchange Gunfire Over Food Items Distributed By Borno State Govt.

At least one person was injured Thursday at the Borno State government house when soldiers and police exchanged fire as they fought over food items distributed by the government to mark the Ramadan fast, PREMIUM TIMES reports.

The government since on Monday have been distributing large amounts of rice and semovita to poor residents.

According to the report, police officers barred vehicles from accessing the venue of the distribution.

An eyewitness said that an Army truck showed up at the venue at about 11AM insisting on gaining entrance.

The police officers, suspecting that the soldiers were trying to get their own share of the foodstuff, turned them back.

The angry soldiers allegedly opened fire, shooting a police officer on the leg. The police also responded with gunshots, causing chaos as people ran for their lives.

The report also said that angry policemen beat up a soldier who was drafted to help control the crowd during the distribution, saying he instigated the crisis.

The commander of the operation Lafiya Dole, Major General Lucky Irabor, was called in by the Borno State Attorney General, Kaka Shehu Lawan, to restore order.

Irabor described the incident as “shameful and highly unbecoming of uniformed officers”.

“What is a bag of rice that will give you the cause to be angry? Bag of rice? It is shameful. If the world hears that it is because of bag of that made police and soldiers to be fighting, is it not shameful? Let us not behave like children: all of us have children at home. Soldiers and policemen should be seen to be matured in their dispositions at all times.

While everyone is clapping for good that we have been doing, let us not also do things that will make them to begin to stone us. I want you to calm your nerves, because in a family you are likely to find incidents of misunderstanding,” he said.

The state government has suspended the distribution till further notice.
